The shaft is 3/8" diameter steel with cast aluminum tip, the rope is 5/16" pure manila whipped with black nylon cord. Lewis Temple invented this harpoon tip which is named after him (Temple Toggle). skilled blacksmith from New Bedford, MA, Temple former slave, in 1848 created new type of harpoon with moveable head that prevented the whale from slipping loose.
